The fourth edition of the Chief of Defence Staff ( CDS) Unity Basketball Championship – South West Zone, will hold in Lagos from 30th September to 5th October, 2025 at the National Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, as announced by the Defence Headquarters.
The annual championship being organised by the Defence Headquarters ( DHQ ), is part of the Chief of Defence Staff ( CDS) non – kinetic approach to strengthening security, while fostering unity, discipline, and teamwork among Nigerian youth through the power of sports.
The tournament which will also serve as an avenue to instill value of peace, resistance and nation – building across communities, is expected to featured 12 elite male basketball teams from South West and neighbouring military teams. The CDS unity basketball championship will also feature Veteran’s exhibition matches and half – time entertainment.
In a signed statement by the Director Defence Information, Brigadier – General Tukur, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Musa emphasised that the Unity Basketball Championship is more than just a game but a platform to unite communities, inspire the youth, and reinforce the value of teamwork and discipline.
“Through non – kinetic approaches, we aim to promote a stronger, more united Nigeria.
The Chief of Defence Staff disclosed also that the objective of the Tournament is to promote unity and peace through sports and engaging youths in positive and productive activities, steering them away from social vices, strengthen civil – military relations through sportsmanship and fair play, and identify, nurture emerging basketball talents who can represent Nigeria Internationally.
Cash prizes, medals, trophies, and certificates will be awarded to participating teams, including the winner of the championship, while special recognition awards, including Most Valuable Player ( MVP) and Tournament Best will also receive rewards.
