The United States Embassy in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed today Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of the President’s Day.
According to a statement by the US MISSION NIGERIA in a post on X disclosed that the celebration of the Day was: Originally established to honour George Washington Birthday, President’s Day now celebrates all United States Presidents and their leadership roles in shaping the nation’s history and positively influencing the world.
In 1879, Congress declared February 22 a federal holiday but in 1968 through 1971 the Law moved the President’s Day Holiday to third Monday of each February in addition to observing Washington’s Birthday, the Postal Service salute presidents through its stamp program.
The most recent stamp to feature a President was last year’s release honouring Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, who served from 1977 to 1981 and died in 2024.
George Washington the “Barge of Military Merit” which later became the Purple Heart, and the medal still bears his image today.
