As the global community today marks the World Press Freedom Day 2026, the National Broadcasting Commission joins in recognising the central role of a free, responsible and professional media in sustaining democratic governance and social stability.
The Regulatory Body disclosed that the theme for this year’s “Shaping a Future at Peace” is both timely and instructive. It underscores a simple but often overlook reality: Peace is not sustained by absent of dissent but by the presence of credible information, informed dialogue and institutional accountability.
Within this context, the media, as Fourth Estate, carries a dual obligations. It must not only inform but do so with discipline. Public trust is not derived from volume or speed but from accuracy, verification and editorial responsibility. Where misinformation, proliferation or standards decline, the consequences extend beyond reputation damage to tangible risks for national cohesion.
The Commission recognises the critical function of broadcasters and journalists as intermediaries between events and public understanding. Citizens depend on media for clarity, especially in periods of uncertainty, balance and restraint.
The broadcasters, editors, presenters, and all media professionals across Nigeria, this is a moment of acknowledgement. The demands of the profession are significant and the operating environment continues to evolve.
None the less, the expectation remains constant: to inform responsibly and uphold the integrity of the profession.
Accordingly, the mandate of National Broadcasting Commission is not to constrain media freedom but to safeguard its credibility, Regulatory oversight, when properly exercise, strengthens rather than weakens. Independently ensuring adherence to established standards such as fairness, objectivity and respect for public interest as codified in the NBC Code.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to fostering a media ecosystem that is diverse, independent and professionally grounded. Such an environment allows for robust expression while maintaining the discipline necessary for societal stability.
Press Freedom is fundamental but it is not absolute. It is inseparable from responsibility. The Commission will continue to engage constructively with Industry stakeholders to ensure that this balance is maintained in a manner that protects both democratic values and national interest.
The push to peaceful future through truth, accountability and responsible communication. The media remains central to that journey.
