The 20th edition of the Prestigious World Athletics Championship begins today, Saturday, 13th September 2025 at the National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.
This is the third time that the championship will be held in Japan, following the 1991 event held in Tokyo at the former National Stadium and the 2007 event held in Osaka also in Japan.
At this edition, 2202 Athletes from 200 Countries will compete for medals in 49 events on the programmes which will take place from today 13th to 20th September, 2025 in which 149 medals will be awarded during the nine – action – packed days of competition.
Athletes will compete for glory in the following events, which includes: Men’s and Women’s 100 Metres, * 200 Metres Men and Women, *400 Metres Men and Women, * 800 Metres Men and Women, * 1,500 Metres Men and Women, * 5000 Metres Men and Women, * 10,000 Metres Men and Women, Marathon for both Men and Women and other events.
They will also compete for medals in the Field events including: High Jump, Pole Vault, Long Jump, Shot Put, Discuss, Javelin and Hammer.
A total of $8,498.000 ( Eight million four hundred and ninety – eight thousand) in prize money will be won by Individual athletes and relay teams. Athlete in the Individual events will go home with the following prize – money: Athlete that come first will earn: US $70,000. Second placed: US $35,000. Athlete in third position goes home with US $ 22, 000. Fourth position: US $16,000. Fifth: US $11,000. Sixth: US $7,000. Seventh: US $6,000 and Eighth: US $2000.
For the Teams event: First position will earn: US $ 80,000. Team that place second will take home US $40,000. Third placed team: US $ 20,000. Fourth: US $16,000. Fifth: US $ 12,000. Sixth: US $8,000. Seventh: US $ 6000 and Eight position: US $4000.
There is also a “World Record” bonus of US $ 100,000.
There will be 14 sessions on day one ( Saturday 13 September through to the evening session on day nine Sunday 21 September.
