Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Secondary School, Bariga, Lagos State has emerged the winner of the 8th edition of the Lagos Reads Inter – Schools Competition among Public Secondary Schools that qualified from the preliminary rounds held in various educational districts of the State.

The “Eight Edition” of the yearly contested Competition, was held at the Office of Local Government Establishments Training Hall, First Secretariat, Ikeja on Thursday, 21st May, 2026.

The yearly Quiz Competition was organised by Lagos State Library Board in collaboration with the Ministry of Tertiary Education to advance knowledge, reading culture, bonding among students and encouraging the constant use of State – owned Library by the students and other stakeholders in the State.

At this year’s competition against all odds, Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Secondary School, Bariga, Lagos ably represented by trio of AJILEYE ENIOLUWASANU, DAWODU OLUWASOLAMI and AMOO AMIDAT, with total of 14 points after they answered questions which covered wide – range of subjects from Sciences, Mathematics, Economics, Use of English, General Knowledge to Current Affairs, about Lagos Affairs.

The winning School at this year’s edition went home with a Giant trophy, gold medals, branded bags, certificate of participation, as Champion and overall winners of the Competition.

Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Secondary School, who defeated other Schools from the remaining Five Education Districts in the State were led to the Competition by one their teachers: Mr. Atilola Oluwaseun.

The winner, Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Secondary School, Bariga, Lagos, were closely followed by Agidingbi Senior Grammar School, Ikeja, from District Six, represented by MUSTAPHA HUJATULLAH, UGO VICTORIA and EHIABHI JUDITH with 12 points secured the second position, and went home with the Second – placed trophy, silver medals, branded bags, books and certificates.

They were accompanied to the competition by two of their teachers, Mr. Bamidele Timileyin Adeolu and Mrs. Fatoye Ololade Mariam.

As it was in the two previous editions of the Quiz Competition, A tie – break was again required this time between Agidingbi Senior Grammar School, Ikeja, and Government Senior College, Agege, to decide the third placed winners of the 2026 Quiz Competition.

Following the outcome of the tie – break, Government Senior College, Agege, Lagos State, represented by NDUBUISI OLUCHI, POPOOLA OLUWATOSIN, OGUNDELE PRECIOUS from District One placed third at the competition and received a trophy, bronze medals, branded bags, books and certificates to show for their efforts. They were accompanied by two of their teachers, Mr. Odeyale Oluwasegun and Mrs. Adigun Taiwo at the event.

While Flagging – off the 2026 Inter – Schools Quiz Competition among Public Secondary Schools in Lagos State, in its eighth edition, the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, ably represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Adeniran Waheed Kasali, expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo – Olu for his commitment, passion and love in ensuring that Lagos State Students have quality and enduring education which enables them to achieve greater heights through their journey in life.

He also thanked Mr. Governor for graciously granting approval for this year’s competition to be held at the appropriate time so as to build confidence and encourage reading culture among the various students in the state.

“The presence of Lagos State Government at this eighth edition of the quiz competition, shows that the State is committed to building, encouraging our students across all levels to cultivate reading habit and most importantly imbibe reading culture which significantly will open many doors of success and opportunities for them to explore.”

“Education and Technology, which is the third pillar of the THEME+ Agenda in Lagos State is very key in the educational advancement, as major stakeholders our teeming students should be carry along through relevant programmes aimed at promoting reading culture that will give them clear understanding of who they really are.

The Commissioner also in his message to the students disclosed that to “Survive in Lagos smart economic circle, there is need for them to be conversant with the social and inter – human development and the only way such can happen is to engage in continuous reading and learning so as to be familiar with realities of our society.

Referencing to a message in the address by the Acting Director of Lagos Library Board, the Commissioner urged all the students and participating schools at the end of this competition not to see themselves as losers but as winners because by reaching this stage of the competition required putting more efforts in reading, preparations to excel in the competition.

In conclusion, The Honorable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon Tolani Sule thanked all the invited guests speakers, especially for the courage, commitment of the students and their teachers against all odds in attending this year’s competition.

He also thanked the two past directors of the Lagos State Library Board, Mr. Oyadipe and Mr. Bogunjoko for their show of love and supporting roles towards the success of the competition and for identifying and standing by the Acting Director of the Library Board for her success.

In her welcome address, the Acting Director, Lagos State Library Board, Mrs Sofuye Oyenike, disclosed that through this year’s quiz competition the Lagos State Government is investing heavily in education knowing fully that education is the pillar upon which the solid foundation of other development is laid upon.

She said, in line with its mandate and mission, Lagos State Library Board is committed in promoting academic excellence and ensuring that the reading culture in Lagos State continue to be improved in consonance with the 3rd pillar of Mr. Governor’s THEME+ Agenda which is Education and Technology. and urged the students to work harder in course of their study and shun all negative vices that can effectively bring setback to the growth of education in the State.

She commended the Teachers for their hardwork, commitments and efforts in nurturing the students in learning and character molding so as to be good and contributing meaningfully to the advancement of the society. She then urged them to keep the flame of learning alive in various Public Schools.

In her goodwill message, the Chairperson, National Association of Nigeria Libraries, Mrs. Askira Aishat, sincerely commended both the Lagos State Government and Lagos State Library Board for creating this platform that celebrate critical thinking, resilience and healthy competition among the students in Lagos State for this brilliant ideas worthy of emulation by other State of the Federation.

“To all the participating schools, during and after the competition through your preparation commitment and courage exhibited you are already winners, as the competition is not only about winning the trophies, but earning recognition.”

She disclosed that “Reading is a powerful tools by which the students will discover new ideas, understand different cultures, becomes future leaders, policy makers, innovators of our great country, Nigeria. She also said that it will also afford the students to develop their creativity and prepare them to solve real world problems that may in the course of their journey in life.

In conclusion, She stated that reading culture is the solid foundation of a well informed and enlightened society. And your imagination will let you be in every part of the world when you read.

Highlights of the 2026 Inter – Schools Quiz Competition, was presentation of the Exception Leadership Achievement Awards both to Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule and his Permanent Secretary, Mr. Adeniran Waheed Kasali by the Founder of African Writers Tribe, Mrs Josephine Ogunfere for their Support, outstanding contributions and commitments in ensuring adequate funding to make sure that this laudable yearly Quiz Competition to imbibe reading culture in the students across the state is held consistently at the exact date and time, which she said is highly commendable.

Later in an interview with NEWS NAVIGATOR, Mrs Soyoye Olayinka Ebunoluwa, an award – winning Principal of Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Secondary School, Bariga, congratulated her students who against all odds emerged the champions / overall winners of the just concluded Inter – School Quiz Competition among Public Secondary Schools in Lagos State, where they displayed their educational prowess in the way they answered all the questions posed to them in the course of the quiz competition.

She disclosed that the outstanding performance by the students during the Quiz Competition among Public Secondary Schools in the State, organised by the State Library Board was inline with the objective, mission and vision of Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Secondary School, established in 1964 as A leading girls secondary school committed to raising intelligent, disciplined, purpose – driven young women through education and strong moral values, resilience, boldness, which her students shown during the quiz competition, which enables them to triumph easily so as to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the society.

She then described the multiple award – winning school as A legacy of Excellence: Sustaining Academic distinction and sporting excellence.

Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Secondary School, Bariga, multiple award winners, were *3 – Time State Champions, ANCOPSS Essay Challenge. *1st Runner – up, WRO Lagos Robotics Competition ( 2025). *Best Overall LASTSAP Essay & Road Project ( LASTMA @ 25). *First Runner – up, Best Senior Public School in Nigeria, presented by the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Awards; *Best Overall in the Lagos State School Traffic Safety Advocacy Programme ( LASTSAP) and 1st Position, 2026 Akintola Williams Youth Debate, organised by the Nigeria – British Association.

In the Sporting arena, the School took the 1st Position in both Scrabble and Ayo Olopon during the Education District 11 Sports Festival.

On a part, for her commitment, foresight, dedication, discipline, administrative acumen, hard work and character molding of the students, Mrs Soyoye Olayinka Ebunoluwa, the elated Principal of Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Secondary School, Bariga, emerged in April of 2024 as the Best Principal in the Senior School Category at 17th Annual Merit Awards organised by Education District 11.

In the course of the interview, Mr. Atilola Oluwaseun who led the students of Eva Adelaja Girls Senior Secondary School to Quiz Competition commended their Principal, Mrs Soyoye Olayinka Ebunoluwa for her guidance, support, encouragement, confidence building and motherly role through the provision of enabling environment for them thrive and emerged top at the competition.

Also two of winning students, Dawodu Oluwasolami, Amidat Amoo, thanked both their Principal and teacher for the confidence reposed in them and for giving them the chance to represent the school at the competition which led to the feat achieved by the school at the Quiz Competition among Public Secondary Schools in Lagos State. Where the school became the champions / overall winners.
