The twentieth edition of G20 Summit, a meeting of heads of state and government will hold from this weekend, Saturday, 22 to Sunday, 23 November 2025 in nasrec Johannesburg, South Africa.
The meeting tagged 2025 G20 Johannesburg Summit, will be the G20 Summit to be held in South Africa and the first on the Continent of Africa and would be chaired by South Africa President, Cyril Ramaphosa.
South Africa, whose tenure ends at this Summit, assumed G20 Presidency from 1 December 2024 to November 2025, approximately five years ahead of the UN Agenda 2030 deadline.
Apart from United States of America boycotting the Summit, other members that will participate during this Summit are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa ( Host ), South Korea, Turkey, United Kingdom, Africa Union, European Union, International Organisations and World’s Financial Institutions.
South Africa has adopted the “theme” Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability as topic for the twentieth edition of the summit. The theme reflects South Africa’s Intentions to build on the efforts and successes of the three G20 Presidencies of the Global South and to advance the development agenda.
Through Solidarity, South Africa seeks to achieve a people – centered, development oriented and inclusive future in an interconnected world. By promoting Equality, the Country seeks to ensure fair treatment, opportunities and progress for all people and nations, regardless of their economic status, gender, race, geographic location or other characteristics. Sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own.
South African government has budgeted R691 million about 38.7 million USD in preparation for the G20 events.
The G20 was founded in 1999 after the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 to 1998, as an informal forum for the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the most Important Industrialized and developing economic to discuss International economic and financial stability.
Leaders that will be participating at this year’s edition of G20 Summit, includes: Nigeria President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be attending this year’s edition on the invitation of President Ramaphosa, other leaders that will also grace the two – day summit are: Argentina President, Javier Milel, United Kingdom Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, France President, Emmanuel Macron, South Africa President, Cyril Ramaphosa (Host), Brazil President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, African Union, Chairperson of African Union and President of Angola, Joao Lourenco, European Union, President of the European Commission, Ursula Van de Leyen.
The United States that boycotted this edition will host the 2026 G20 Summit and will assume the Chairmanship of Group at the end of this year’s Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. It may be recalled that earlier this month, Trump said no American officials would attend the Johannesburg Summit, accusing South Africa of committing “human rights abuse against White Afrikaners. The allegations South Africa has rejected, which she said was not supported with evidence.
But in response President Ramaphosa said that South Africa can not be bullied by any Country. President Spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya says, President Cyril Ramaphosa would not hand over the G20 Presidency on Sunday to a Junior Officials. President Ramaphosa has previously said he would hand over the Presidency to the empty chair reserved for US Vice President in the plenary hall.
