INEC Today Conducts By – Elections into Different Constituencies in 12 States

The National Independent Electoral Commission ( INEC ) will today, August 16th, 2025 conduct by – elections into 16 Constituencies in Twelve States of the Federation.

According to INEC the by – elections will hold in two Senatorial Districts of Anambra and Edo States, five Federal Constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun and Oyo States, and nine State Constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna ( 2 ), Kogi, Niger, Taraba and Zamfara States respectively.

The by – elections being conducted today by INEC was as a result either resignation or death of serving members of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly and similarly, due to Court – ordered rerun election in Enugu South 1 State Constituency of Anambra State and Ghari/ Tsanyawa State Constituency in Kano State will hold simultaneously with the by – elections.

INEC has earlier disclosed that prior to today’s by – elections all the sensitive and non – sensitive materials have already been delivered to the States, including Election technology, such as Bimodal Voter Accreditation System ( B V A S ), has been configured for the election and also recruitment and training of ad-hoc staff as well as security and logistics were concluded preparatory to today’s election.

For today’s election, the Commission appealed to all those involved in the by – elections, be it political parties, candidates, voters, party agents, observers, and media to strictly adhere to the provisions of the law, regulations and guidelines and to ensure seamless processes

In the same vein, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has put in place some security measures to ensure smooth, free, credible and orderly conduct of the by elections in the affected 12 states.

The measures includes: Deployments of Senior Officers of the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police to assist the affected State Commissioners of Police, also officers and men of the Police Mobile Force, Special Intervention Squad, Force Intelligence Department and other tactical units have equally been deployed for the by – elections.

IGP Kayode Egbetokun also ordered the restriction of all forms of vehicular’s movement on roads, waterways, and all forms of transportation from 12 am to 6 pm in today’s election within affected local government areas except those on essential services, including Officials of the Independent Electoral Commission ( INEC ), accredited media, and electoral observers, ambulances responding to medical emergencies and firefighters.

Egbetokun reiterates the ban on all security aides to VIP and escorts from accompanying their principals and politicians to polling booths and collation centres during the election. He also noted that State – established and owned security outlets or organisations, quasi security units and privately- owned guards and security outlets, were also barred from participating in the election security management.

The Police boss urged all officers deployed for the special duty to ensure compliance with the NPF Standard Operational Protocols for the elections and urged all the citizens to be law abiding during and after the election.
